1. Please tell us about yourself.
My name is Rebecca Henderson and I’m a 1L at the University of Kansas School of Law. I played volleyball in college and attended Pittsburg State University. I was a Communication major with an emphasis in Public Relations. I grew up in Topeka, KS.
2. What first made you want to go to law school?
I have always wanted to go to law school, especially when I first sat in a courtroom in 5th grade. My dad was selected to be a juror and I thought that the judge and lawyers had the most fascinating job because of the way they advocated for their client and used their words for persuasion. I though it was interesting that not one side or another was “right” or “wrong”, but that both lawyers were trying to help their client the best.
3. Why did you choose your law school?
I chose to go to KU Law because of the culture. The students and Staff are so incredibly kind and helpful. On my tour, my ambassador told me that it was a competitive atmosphere, but in the best way. He explained that people wanted others to succeed. I chose KU because of proximity to Kansas City as well as to my family.
4. What is one thing you wish you knew about law school or the admissions process ahead of time?
Something I would have liked to know for admission to law school would have been to apply as early as I could. I also would have advise to tour each school you apply to. I think it’s important to get a feel for the school and how the staff and students interact.
5. What student organizations or activities are you involved in?
Some student organizations and activities I am involved in include: I was elected the 1L Representative for the Student Bar Association, a member of the Women in Law society, and was selected as a KU Law ambassador.
6. Discuss any exciting jobs or internships you’ve had while in law school.
I have not had any exciting jobs or internships in law school yet, but I am looking forward to a job or internship this summer.
7. What do you like to do in your spare time?
In my spare time, I like to work out. It helps me relieve stress from law school. I really enjoy watching any type of sports on the TV, especially baseball, basketball, and football.
8. What is your dream career?
My dream career is to work at a midsized firm. I would like to practice in the areas of Family Law, Employment Law, and/or Estate Planning. I think a midsized firm would be the best for what type of law I’m wanting to go in to.
